“Matt, what question should I ask you that will make me want to hire you?”

If you’re a hiring manager, this approach to interviewing might seem like a little bit of a cop-out. After all, shouldn’t you have all your questions formulated in advance?

This question can be a stroke of genius, though—at least according to psychologist Angela Duckworth. It forces the candidate to be transparent about their understanding of the company, the workplace and the needs of the role.

Rather than a deflection, this question is a sort of brilliant pop quiz. It can give you great insight into how thoroughly the candidate has researched the role and how quickly they think on their feet.

It can also be an ideal question with which to end an interview.
